SSC eyes Sports Fest reform; Pursues Varsity ‘Drafting’

Mainly to avoid the notion of ‘unfair and biased recruitment’ of the School of Accountancy and Business Management (SABM) varsity players, the KASAMA-SSC SABM Assembly decided to ‘draft’ the SABM players last Thursday, February 9.

Unlike the NBA/PBA drafting wherein the teams will choose their players, the members of the SABM Men’s and Women’s Volleyball team conducted a ‘draw lots’ to determine what team they will play with. Aside from this, the drafted varsity member will automatically be the team captain of his/her assigned organization.

“Last year kasi medyo biased ‘yung pagkakadesignate ng mga players, so ngayon, para malessen natin at para wala ng masabi ‘yung ibang orgs, nagbunutan na lang para fair. At para mayroon din ‘yung element of surprise, Actually, the drafting, aside sa designation ng players, ‘yun na rin yung advertisement for the Sports Fest para alam nila na we’re on the process of making the Sports Fest happen,” Sports Committee Chairman and 3rd year Mayor John Robert Ginez said.

Both the players of the organizations and the varsity are in favor of the drafting. There are, however, some foreseen cons with the current system.

“’Yung cons lang niya (drafting), maraming varsity players pa rin na ayaw yung team na napuntahan niya. So puwede ring hindi niya ibigay yung all-out support sa team na napunta sa kanya,” Ginez added.

“[In] favor but I have some reservations,” said Tristan Apostol, a member of the defending Men’s Volleyball champion, Society of Integrated Commercians for Academic Progress (SICAP). “Ang ayaw ko lang is ‘yung fact na yung varsity agad ‘yung team captain kasi what if hindi siya magstep-up sa game? Ganoon. Pero as a player, go with the flow na lang.”

SABM Libero Nicole Gammad sees the Sports Fest as a way for the SABM players to showcase their game. “Ipapakita namin [SABM varsity] ‘yung responsibility as a varsity player na hindi susuko ng basta basta kapag hindi mo kasama yung team [SABM].”

Commercian organizations are set to clash from the 13th until the 27th of March for the Sports Fest titles.

“Expect the unexpected na lang,” Ginez closed.sports-2
