No Pressure: SABM Lady Ballers notch back-to-back Finals berth

After failing to extend their reign last year, the School of Accountancy and Business Management Women’s Basketball Team (SABM WBT) clinched a shot to reclaim the crown after defeating the School of Natural Sciences WBT, 64-54, last March 30 at the Prince Bernhard Gym.

The SABM WBT sailed smoothly through the eliminations with a clean 7-0 win-loss record. Despite not dropping a single game, the ladies in yellow did not took their trainings for granted upon entering the semi-finals.

“Hard training and focus lang sa game,” Captain Kathleen Ariaga shared. “Walang kampante kasi wala pa kaming napapatuayan,” Gunner Alkrissa Catacutan added.

Their semis battle started neck-to-neck as both the SABM and SNS squads seemed to just exchange baskets. The match’s opening frame ended with SABM grabbing a one-point lead, 13-12. The last year’s runner-ups, however, fired three consecutive baskets and a free throw to start the second quarter with a 7-0 run and further extended the lead to 8 at 20-12. The SNS team tried to fight back but failed due to SABM’s defense thus, ending the first half at 29-22.

Batnag led the SNS squad and tried to even the score at the 2nd half by erupting mini-runs and cutting the SABM lead to as low as six points. The ladies in yellow answered back with their own baskets to edge the opponents and enjoy a 7-point lead at 61-54 with less than a minute left in the regulation. SABM sealed its victory with a three-point buzzer beater shot from Nissiah Medina.

Despite the fact that the hard-court battle is heating up as the final battle inch closer, the SABM team feels no pressure. “Sa akin, wala. Kasi hindi naman tayo champions last year. Sabi nga ni Ma’am [Nes Navarro, SABM WBT Coach], underdog kami kaya walang kapressure-pressure. Mas gusto namin [na] makuha yung championship ngayon,” Ariaga added.

The yellow squad expects the Finals to be a hard-fought match. “Babawi sila sa amin kasi natalo namin sila nung eliminations,” Captain Ariaga admitted.

Alkrissa Catacutan, Julienne Estigoy and Jacquilyn Kawig led the SABM pack with 15, and 10 points respectively.

The SABM WBT is set to clash with the School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS), who defeated the reigning queens School of Engineering and Architecture, this Monday, April 3, 6:30 pm at the Prince Bernhard Gym.

Sana madaming crowd yung pumunta. Sana manood sila and support SABM,” Catacutan closed.
